Rebels Off and Running
-Oxford, MS

When a team returns a player who has finished 2nd and 5th in the Heisman ballot the previous 2 seasons, Other teams will respect that player. If it is a HB, they will respect the run game and try to stop it. If that same team is starting a Freshman QB, has no real deep threat at WR, and has a backup HB that will be an instant All-American next season... you get the picture.

But when that HB is able to rush for 168 yards and 2 TD, and that Freshman QB is able to throw for 310 yards and 3 TDs, then what can you say?

That is just what happened tonight as the Ole Miss Rebels played host to the Fresno State Bulldogs. Senior All-AMerican and heisman candidate Brandon Bolden is the first player mentioned in the HB role with all those yards.

"Teams key on me, its hard Im not going to lie," says Bolden after the game. "But when you can win as a team and be as efficient as we were today, especially running the ball, that just makes it all the more of a good feeling knowing that they couldn't stop you."

Blake Harrell, the Ole Miss QB, is widely heralded after coming out of HS as the #1 player in the nation, regardless of position, in the 2010 recruiting class. Through his first 3 games, he had 10 TDs and he hadn't thrown an Int. This game he wasn't so lucky as the Rebs dialed up the long ball early and a badly thrown ball was intercepted. Later in the 3rd quarter, it happened again. But on the season Harrell is looking at a 183 rating, 1100 yards and 13 TDs through 4 games.

The Ole Miss Defense, young and strong after some strong recruiting efforts, held the Bulldogs to just 229 yards total offense, and freshman CB Sam Hadley picked of a pass.

The Rebels will go on the road to play their 2nd SEC game against Vandy next week, then will get ready for the big matchp hosting #11 Alabama, which looked like a game of the week before Bama was upset this week.

Ole Miss still has #9 UGA, #20 LSU, #12 Boise St left on the schedule.

Oklahoma State - 52 Texas Tech - 35

"The game was a lot closer than the score will tell you," says Coach Macc who was bombarded with questions after their Tuesday practice. When he was asked about what he felt they did well on and how they could improve, "we've been working all week on 3rd and long situations, we really need to get better at those if we want to be on top of the BCS at the end of the year".

Brandon Weeden once again has another win as a starter going 17 for 38 throwing 4TDs. Camera crews caught him sticking around after practice to get his timing down with his receiving corps. The receivers that were out there were his biggest target, Adrian Richards his snake in tall grass Hubert Anyiam and his TE Bassett. "Brandon's a great player, he can move in the pocket, he makes good decisions but most of all he makes plays when we NEED him to. Count how many throws this guy has made for us on third and long or when we needed a conversion. It's no surprise that when we need a first down, everyone looks at Brandon. We've developed a good connection over the last year and I think the idea of him playing at the next level has defenitely increased over the past year,"

Adrian Richards speaks highly of his quarterback. In fact, anyone who spoke to anyone had nothing but positive things to say about the team, except for Coach Macc of course.

"We're a family here. Many of us come from the south and have been playing football against or with eachother for years. We all understand that nobodies good enough on this team to win games on their own or even draw defences off of other targets. We all need to be going 100% at all times on that field and I think that's why we're still undefeated," Running back Travis Miller was Oklahoma St's shining star this week. Pre-Season starter, Kyle Staley had left the last two consecutive games with an injury so Coach Macc limited his touches.

"It's not that we don't think he's a strong kid, it's not that we like Travis better. It's come to our attention we're playing for the end of the year now. Everybodies fired up and I thought Kyle could use a week off of getting 25+ carries. Look what the kid did with the opportunity, Staley was only called on for goal-line situations but still had 25 yards on 3 carries and a score. Can't complain about that,"

Miller ran the ball 29 times for 174 yards and had a touchdown running and receiving the ball. On their very first offensive play of the game, Miller set the tempo for the offence taking the ball 33 yards into the house after a interception by CB Martin. In the second quarter in a tie ball game, Miller was handed a pitch right on a 3rd and 6 that the Cowboys needed to convert on. While he had some blocking, it was truly the running back that showed his explosiveness and power breaking tackles and not letting the Red Raiders deny him the opportunity to get the first down.

"I just lowered my shoulders and kept my legs pumping. I must give all the credit to the guys up-front though. They're the most underrated group in the entire country. It's a pleasure to be running behind them, they always make huge holes for us to run through and let us make plays.

The Cowboys seem to be in sync - they rank #6 in the country for total offence, #2 in PPG and lead the league by far in average rushing yards against per game. The Cowboys have yet to give up over 50 yards on the ground in one game. A facet of the game that Coach Macc stresses and enthusiastically approaches.

What's making the guy pull his hair out at night is the pass defence.

"It just seems like we get disected week in, week out. No matter how we prepare - the other team still makes huge catches they have no business pulling down. Don't let my DBs hear this but all they've had to hear this year was improve, improve, improve... less than 100 yards this and that but we've got to recognize this is an elite football league. We've played some of the best quarterbacks in the country and still none of them have beat us. We're going to be practicing defending the pass all week and using Richards to emulate A&M's big time receiver - Fuller. We've gone through film and broke down when and where Tannehill passes him the ball. We'll be focused on him the entire game so if they want to get us through the air they'll have to find another target. It's a huge game for us because a win this late in the season weeds out whose going to the big show and who isn't. I'll have the boys ready,"

Coach abruptly ended the interview session and jogged back to the practice field where quarterback was still throwing to his receivers.
